Supporting Teens Through Adolescent Therapy
Adolescence is a time of growth, discovery, and change—but it can also feel overwhelming. Teens face academic pressure, social challenges, shifting identities, and the stress of preparing for adulthood. While many young people navigate these years successfully, others struggle with anxiety, depression, identity questions, or conflict at home.
Adolescent therapy offers teens a safe and supportive space to express themselves, explore their experiences, and build resilience. My goal is to help young people feel heard and understood while developing tools to manage emotions, relationships, and life’s demands. I am able to support your child in a way that is distinctly different than the other adults that they know, since I am not an authority figure in the same way as their parent, teacher, or coach.
Why Teens Benefit from Therapy
The teenage years are full of new responsibilities and expectations, which can create emotional challenges. Common reasons families seek adolescent counseling include:
- Anxiety and stress – worry about school, friendships, or the future
- Depression – sadness, hopelessness, or withdrawal from activities and loved ones
- Identity exploration – questions about gender, sexuality, or self-image
- Family conflict – frequent arguments, communication struggles, or changes in family structure
- Peer relationships – bullying, peer pressure, or difficulty forming healthy friendships
- Trauma recovery – healing from abuse, assault, or other difficult experiences
- Self-harm behaviors – coping with distress in harmful ways
- Life transitions – adjusting to moves, divorce, blended families, or other changes
Therapy helps teens process these challenges in a way that feels safe, respectful, and nonjudgmental.
What to Expect in Adolescent Therapy
Working with teens requires a balance of structure, empathy, and trust. In therapy, adolescents can:
- Talk openly about their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a confidential setting
- Learn coping skills for managing anxiety, depression, or stress
- Build self-esteem and confidence in their identity
- Develop healthier communication and conflict resolution skills
- Explore values and goals as they prepare for adulthood
- Gain strategies for balancing school, friendships, and family responsibilities
For parents, therapy provides reassurance that their teen has support while also offering opportunities to improve family communication and strengthen relationships.
My Approach
I understand that no two teens are alike, so I tailor therapy to meet each adolescent’s unique needs and personality. My approach combines:
- Talk therapy: providing space for teens to explore and process their experiences
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): helping teens identify and reframe unhelpful thought patterns
- Art: painting and drawing help teens express their emotions and experiences when words are not enough
- Trauma-informed care: recognizing how past experiences affect current behavior and emotions
When appropriate, I also collaborate with parents to support the family as a whole while maintaining the teen’s confidentiality and trust.
