Pregnancy and Postpartum

Pregnancy and Postpartum Counseling at Marissa Greenberg, LMFT

Pregnancy and the transition to parenthood can be a time of joy and excitement, but it also brings profound change. Many people find themselves repeating, “This isn’t what I expected.” Difficulties with fertility, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, depression, birth trauma and struggles with identity can block the joy of growing one’s family.

I provide specialized counseling for individuals and couples navigating pregnancy, postpartum, and the early parenting years. With certification in Perinatal Mental Health from Postpartum Support International, I bring both expertise and compassion to help you feel supported, validated, and empowered during this life-changing stage.

Common Challenges During Pregnancy and Postpartum

You don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Counseling can provide support for many perinatal concerns, including:

  • Prenatal and postpartum depression – persistent sadness, hopelessness, anger, or loss of joy
  • Anxiety and intrusive thoughts – excessive worry, racing thoughts, or fears about the baby’s safety
  • Birth trauma – recovering emotionally from a difficult or traumatic childbirth
  • Identity shifts – adjusting to new roles as a parent while balancing other parts of life
  • Relationship strain – navigating changes in intimacy, communication, and responsibilities with a partner
  • Parenting stress – coping with sleep deprivation, feeding challenges, or overwhelming responsibilities
  • Loss and grief – processing miscarriage, stillbirth, or struggles with fertility

If any of these experiences feel familiar, know that you are not alone—and that support is available.

How Therapy Helps

Pregnancy and postpartum therapy provides a safe space to process your experiences and receive tools for coping. In therapy, you can expect to:

  • Explore your feelings and experiences without judgment
  • Learn coping strategies for managing mood, anxiety, and stress
  • Address and heal from birth trauma with trauma-informed techniques such as EMDR
  • Strengthen your relationship with your partner during the transition to parenthood
  • Build confidence in your role as a parent and trust in your instincts
  • Receive validation and support tailored to your unique circumstances

My role is not to tell you what kind of parent to be, but to help you find the balance, resilience, and strength you already carry within you.

My Approach

Because perinatal experiences are deeply personal, I tailor counseling to your needs. My approach may include:

  • Talk therapy: to explore feelings, experiences, and identity shifts
  • Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR): to process birth trauma or past experiences impacting the present
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): to help couples navigate changes in their bond and deepen connection
  • Practical strategies: to manage stress, improve communication, and build a supportive home environment

I create a compassionate and inclusive space, welcoming individuals and couples of all family structures, backgrounds, and identities.

Support for Couples

Pregnancy and parenthood affect not only individuals but also relationships. Couples counseling during the perinatal period can help partners:

  • Communicate more effectively about needs and expectations
  • Navigate changes in intimacy and emotional closeness
  • Share responsibilities in ways that feel balanced
  • Support one another through stress, loss, or uncertainty

By working together, couples can emerge stronger and more connected through the challenges of new parenthood.
