Therapy Techniques

Therapy Techniques Tailored to Your Needs

No two people are exactly alike, which means therapy should never be one-size-fits-all. The experiences, challenges, and goals you bring to therapy are uniquely yours, and the strategies we use together should reflect that. At Marissa Greenberg, LMFT, I draw from a variety of evidence-based therapy techniques to create a personalized approach that works for you.

Rather than committing to a single model, I use methods that best fit each client’s needs. Sometimes that means focusing on trauma processing, other times it’s about improving communication in relationships, and often it’s a blend of techniques to address both short-term challenges and long-term growth.

Why Use Multiple Therapy Techniques?

Many clients come to therapy with more than one concern—for example, trauma that impacts their relationship, or anxiety that complicates everyday decision-making. By using a combination of therapeutic approaches, I can provide support that is:

  • Flexible: adapting to what you need session by session
  • Comprehensive: addressing both symptoms and the root causes of distress
  • Personalized: reflecting your unique experiences and goals
  • Effective: using methods backed by research and clinical experience

This integrative approach ensures that therapy is tailored to you —not the other way around.

Evidence-Based Methods

Some of the main techniques I use include:

  • Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR): A proven method for helping clients process trauma and reduce distressing symptoms. EMDR allows the brain to reprocess painful experiences so they no longer feel as overwhelming.
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy For Couples (EFT-C): A highly effective approach for couples and families that focuses on strengthening emotional bonds and breaking negative cycles of interaction.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): A practical method for identifying unhelpful thought patterns and building healthier ways of thinking and behaving.
  • Eclectic interventions including Mindfulness, Art, and Person-Centered Therapy to help clients feel seen, express difficult emotions when words are insufficient, and move through difficult emotions by focusing on the body, mind, and breath.

Each of these modalities form the foundation of the work I do with clients.

How Techniques Are Applied

The techniques we use in therapy depend on your specific situation. For example:

  • If you are struggling with trauma, we may use EMDR to help you process painful memories while also incorporating CBT to manage anxiety symptoms.
  • If you and your partner are facing relationship distress, EFT can guide you toward new ways of connecting, while communication strategies help you put insights into practice.
  • If you are experiencing depression or anxiety, CBT tools may be combined with mindfulness practices to support emotional regulation and balance.
  • If you’re not sure what you need, eclectic therapy ensures we  have the flexibility to try different approaches until we find what resonates.

My role is to guide you through these options, so therapy always feels supportive and relevant to your goals.

What Clients Can Expect

When you work with me, you can expect therapy to be:

  • Collaborative: We’ll discuss your needs and choose techniques together.
  • Adaptive: Methods can shift over time as your goals evolve.
  • Compassionate: No matter the technique, you’ll always be met with empathy and respect.
  • Goal-oriented: While insight is important, we’ll also focus on practical strategies you can use in your daily life.
